The Abbotsford Heat 2012-13 training camp concluded this evening as Team White defeated Team Red 3-2 in inter-squad action.

Second year forward and 2011-12 Top Rookie Dustin Sylvester opened the scoring at 12:16 of the first, as he took advantage of a Red turnover with a short-side wrist shot from the slot.

Team Red had a chance to even the scoring in the first, but Brett Olson’s snap shot from the slot hit the post after getting past Barry Brust. Olson batted the puck out of the air, spun, and fired, but it remained 1-0.

Roman Horak opened the scoring in the second period at 14:06. Horak took a nice pass from Tyler Ruegsegger and snapped a low shot past net-minder Barry Brust for Team Red’s first goal which tied the game 1-1.

Later in the second period, Brust made a glove save on highly-touted Flames prospect Sven Baertschi before being replaced by Danny Taylor halfway through the frame.

Team White’s second goal came midway through the second period when Krys Kolanos’ point shot found its way past Alex Evin. Kolanos led the Heat in scoring last season with 31 goals in 47 games.

In the third period Zach McKelvie and Gaelan Patterson dropped the gloves in front of Team Red’s bench, it was the only fight in a physical game that saw numerous hits and post-whistle scrums.

Shortly after the scrap, Team White went ahead by two goals when Michael Ferland took a David Eddy pass and scored on a breakaway.

With just 2:42 remaining in the third period, Team Red cut the deficit to one goal. Ruegsegger setup Jamie Fritsch in the high slot, who beat Danny Taylor for his only goal against on the evening.
With less than two minutes remaining, a timeout was called by Team White who led the game by one. White held on to win the game despite being outshot 29-19.

Team Red finished the night with one goal on seven power play opportunities, while Team White made good on one of three chances. Team Red had a five-on-three man advantage in the first period for over a full minute, but were thwarted by Barry Brust who made numerous quality saves.

Leland Irving played the first period for Team Red, stopping 9 of 10 shots before Alex Evin and Grant Rollheiser closed out goaltending duty in the second half. Barry Brust and Danny Taylor each allowed a single goal in 30 minutes of play, and combined to give Team White the win.

Heat Training camp is now closed, with the first cuts expected on Saturday, and the regular season opening in less than a week.

The Heat’s fourth season of AHL hockey officially opens on October 12, 2012 when the club hosts the Peoria Rivermen (St. Louis). Tickets start at just $15 per game. To secure a seat and for additional information about Abbotsford Heat tickets, visit: or call 1.877.452.HEAT (4328)
