Abbotsford, BC – The Abbotsford Heat lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Chicago Wolves Friday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). The Heat earned one overtime point in the loss, for a total of five points in the first three games of the season. The Wolves are 4-0-0 in the standings and the Heat are 2-0-1.
The game was scoreless after the first period, with the Wolves outshooting the Heat 11-10.
The Wolves opened the scoring at 9:45 of the second period on a breakaway goal. The Wolves outshot the Heat 9-2 and led 1-0 after the second period.
Tyler Ruegsegger tied the game for the Heat with a power play goal at 2:06 of the third period, assisted by Krys Kolanos and Ben Walter. The Wolves regained the lead at 3:55 of the third period. Roman Horak tied the game on the power play at 5:02, assisted by Ben Walter and Steve McCarthy.
Regulation time ended with the score tied 2-2 to send the game into overtime. The score remained 2-2 after the 5 minute overtime, earning each team a single point. The Wolves scored on three of four attempts in the shootout, while the Heat failed to score on three opportunities.
The Heat were two for four on the power-play, and are five for thirteen on the season. The Heat killed all four penalties to maintain their perfect record on the penalty kill. Danny Taylor stopped 27 of 29 shots for the Heat. The Wolves outshot the Heat 32-29.
The Heat play the Wolves again tomorrow night at 7:00 PM PDT at the AESC and fewer than 1,000 tickets remain. Saturday’s game will be followed by a post-game concert with local band Fighting for Ithaca.
