HISTORY BOOKS WILL REMEMBER 2012-13 HEAT

Barry Brust erased a record that had stood for over 50 years, and Steve McCarthy and Ben Street made a play that caught the attention of the Hockey Hall of Fame in two moments Heat fans won’t forget anytime soon. While the Heat won’t be taking part in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs, they accomplished some feats that created headlines and conversation from around the hockey world in 2012-13.

On November 1st the Heat were tied 0-0 and on the penalty kill in the third period when Steve McCarthy and Ben Street made history. McCarthy scored short-handed to put the Heat up 1-0 over Toronto, and on the ensuing faceoff, centre Ben Street shot the puck off the draw on net, beating goalie Ben Scrivens who was watching the replay of the last goal on the video board.

The two short-handed goals officially came three seconds apart – a pro hockey record – and were too quick to be caught by the camera operators in the building. Weeks after the event, a building employee found security camera footage of the action that showed the two goals were scored less than two seconds apart.

On November 24th Barry Brust shattered a 54-year old record set by goaltending legend Johnny Bower for consecutive minutes of shutout play in the AHL. Bower, a Hall of Fame inductee in 1976, posted 249 minutes and 51 seconds of play without allowing a goal in 1957 with the Cleveland Barons. Brust surpassed that mark in a shootout win over the San Antonio Rampage and extended the record to 268 minutes and 17seconds of play without a goal – a span of more than four games worth of hockey.

Ben Street’s stick and Barry Brust’s jersey are both at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto where they’ll represent
